I read memoirs but I'm accustomed to not expecting much in regards of writing. Very few exhibit great storytelling but this one really does. This book was very enjoyable to read with its honest perception of the world. It can especially be a treat for those who lived in San Francisco throughout the '80s and '90s like myself. Her references of local literary figures and cafes felt like my own memories at times. Since the author and I are close in age, I felt like we had likely been
... in the same spaces at the same time, her memories and mine separated by fine lines.

Had been meaning to read this memoir and found it in the SF Main Library as our City Read. Hooray!I knew that it would be bittersweet--it's the thing that always makes me hesitant about nonfiction. But it was a wonder and a delight to read about San Francisco, and the odd but dreamlike childhood that Ms. Abbott lead. And I cried with and for her young adult self and behavior...only because it was perfectly normal behavior, only in very abnormal circumstances (don't want to spoil it).I felt so glad that she was able to write this book; it must have been an achingly painful and beautiful birthing.
