Sunlight flowed in through a row of big new windows looking out upon the kitchen gardens and across to the woods beyond. Sturdy rough-hewn ceiling beams held swags of flowers, hung to dry: purple statis, golden yarrow, delicate white baby’s breath, those lavender asters that grew in great drifts on the bank behind the Central Building.
