“ASHES WERE SCATTERED around it on the desk and a stray butt had toppled over the ceramic rim. Halfway through proofreading a story for Loves Lost and Found magazine, she struck a match and lit another cigarette, blowing the smoke hard from her lungs. Her mind was not on the story. She'd called Davey three times that morning and had gotten no answer.
