diamonds says: If a book could be compared to a painting then Questlove's Mo' Meta Blues would be any painting by Jackson Pollock. A chaotic-looking and incredibly colorful painting, but instead of yellows, blues, reds, and whites Questlove paints his canvas in splashes of funk, rock, rap, hip-hop, soul, folk, and anything else that even slightly piques his interest. He has been listening to different styles of music all his life and has grown up and seen them evolve from one genre into another a...nd split off into countless more. When you look at Questlove you would probably assume a few things: His main love in music is hip-hop, he probably has more than a fair few afro picks, and he's a damn good drummer. What you wouldn't expect is that he's a fan of The Eagles, and Simon and Garfunkle. That he had to by a Prince album over and over again until his parents eventually gave up and wouldn't try to trash it anymore. That he isn't just in love with hip-hop, but is in love with all music and uses that to discover and listen to music and put that into his work. There are many things about this figure that you wouldn't expect. And he speaks about a lot of it in this book. Half a biography, half a music diary, Mo Meta Blues shows that a true artist doesn't paint what they want, they paint what they feel and like Jackson Pollock Questlove can bring wild colors and emotions to an otherwise blank and dull canvas. Just swap the brush for some drumsticks. wardle says: I'm not a huge Roots fan and I don't (make that didn't) know a ton about Questlove outside of occasionally watching him on Jimmy Fallon and having a couple of Roots albums, but I borrowed this book from my daughter and I loved it. Loved hearing his perspective on all kinds of music, learning about his early life and the evolution of his career in music. I even read all of the very long acknowledgments at the end.MoreLessRead More Read Less
