“We go into the lounge. There are packing boxes piled in the corner and the room is noticeably bare. It’s decorated in the old nineties style of burnt orange wallpaper with a floral border around the middle. It has laminate flooring, an orange sofa and a beanbag. There are an array of toys around the beanbag and a folded back copy of Hello! lies on the sofa. ‘I’ve just made a pot of coffee. I suppose asking if you want one’s a silly question?’ ‘A bit.’ My mouth attempts a smile. ‘Take a ...seat. I’ll be back in a sec.’ She brings in two mugs of coffee and a plate of chocolate biscuits on a tray, setting it on the floor in front of us. ‘Sorry. I’ve packed the table.’ ‘Oh, yeah, right.’ ‘I haven’t seen you at school the last few days?
