Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs series

Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children book series contains three novels written by Ransom Riggs. Among them are “Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children” itself and two sequels: “Hollow City” and “Library of Souls”.

This young adult book was originally intended to be a picture book featuring photographs Riggs had collected, but finally he decided to use his ones and those of some well-known photographs collectors and as a guide from which to put together a narrative. The result was a story about a boy Jacob Portman who follows clues from his grandfather's old photographs which lead him on an adventure that takes him to a large abandoned orphanage.

After some searching of the orphanage, he meets a mysterious girl who seems to be able to answer his questions and bring him to the orphanage he was looking for. Unfortunately that girl has almost led him to his death but two “peculiar” children rescued him from angry mob chases Jacob. They finally take him to Miss Peregrine's orphanage, introduce him to other “peculiar” children and tell him that they are in a time loop that repeats the same day forever because of Miss Peregrine, who creates them to avoid orphanages’ death. Jacob is the only hope for them to stay alive as his ability is to see and stop the Hollowgasts.
In “Hollow City” ten peculiar children flee an army of deadly monsters. And they only one who can help them is their beloved headmistress, Miss Peregrine, but she's trapped in the body of a bird. The extraordinary adventure continues as children journey to London to find a cure for their headmistress. But hideous surprises lurk around every corner…

“Library of Souls” narrates about the adventures of two children and a talking dog. They're all that stands between the sinister wights and the future of peculiar children everywhere. Jacob Portman together with Emma and canine companion Addison MacHenry ventures through history one last time to rescue the peculiar children from a heavily guarded fortress.

The book has been a New York Times best seller. It reached the #1 spot on the Children's Chapter Books. Critics have generally praised the book for creative use of vintage photographs as well as good characterization and settings.
